Acrylic cast sheets are moulded by a one-off casting process, which is similar to the process of making tofu: a framed mould is filled with liquid acrylic (like soya milk) and pressure is applied to solidify it (a plate is pressed against it until it solidifies into a tofu-like shape). This process is capable of producing thicker panels because the raw material can fully fill the mould and solidify during the casting process. However, due to the settling phenomenon in the centre of the mould during casting, the tolerance of the middle of the cast sheet tends to be larger than the four sides, which poses a challenge in terms of thickness control. In contrast, acrylic extruded sheets are continuously extruded at high temperatures, a process that is similar to extruding a dumpling skin in the middle of two metal rollers, where the raw material is mechanically extruded for uniform distribution and rapid curing. Extrusion process in the thickness control is excellent, can produce a smaller thickness tolerance of the sheet, but limited by the principle of mechanical extrusion, it can not make a particularly thick sheet.
In terms of processing performance, acrylic extruded sheet is usually easier than cast sheet for bending and heat forming process, especially suitable for processing larger size sheet, and is conducive to rapid vacuum moulding. This feature makes the extruded sheet in the need for complex shapes and structures in the manufacture of products more advantageous. At the same time, the smaller thickness tolerances of extruded sheets offer more possibilities for precision machining.
