Acrylic is strong (77MPa tension, 130MPa bending) and hard (Rockwell M90). But it shatters under impact like glass. Paradoxically, it excels outdoors: survives decades of UV, rain, and temperatures from -40°C to 80°C without yellowing. Heat it above 65°C? Strength drops sharply. At 40°C, it becomes briefly more flexible.
2. Molecular Secrets & Internal Stress
Cast acrylic (long polymer chains) is stronger, chemical-resistant, and pricier. Extruded (shorter chains) is cheaper but weaker. Thicker sheets handle weight better but trap hidden stress. Poor cutting causes stress cracks. Fix: Annealing (slow heating/cooling). High transparency (92% light transmission) requires pure material but slightly reduces impact resistance.
3. Heat: The Critical Window
160°C: Softens for shaping.
270°C: Starts decomposing.
Risk zone:
Too cold: Brittle, cracks.
Too hot: Bubbles, yellows, degrades.
Solution: Precise cooling control. Fast cooling warps; slow cooling slows production. Vacuum forming uses suction; pressure forming uses force. Both require smooth molds to avoid surface marks.
4. Machining: Handle with Care
Cutting: Use sharp tungsten carbide blades/lasers – dull tools chip edges.
Engraving: Double-flute bits for fine details; multi-flute tools for deep cuts.
Polishing: Sand progressively → buff with diamond paste → flame-polish edges.
Critical: Preheat sheets before machining. Use slow drill speeds. Avoid stress – acrylic cracks easily if mishandled.
5. Bonding & Surface Armor
Solvent welding: Chloroform/dichloromethane fuses sheets chemically (no glue).
Hard coatings (chemical dip or baked-on): Boost scratch resistance. Trade-off: Coated surfaces resist cutting/drilling – require carbide tools and slower machining.
6. Specialty Acrylics & Mass Production
Flame-retardant: Additives lower heat tolerance. Process 10°C cooler than standard.
Anti-static: Minimize friction during handling. Control humidity and use grounding.
Batch optimization: Log temperature, pressure, and cycle times. Saving seconds per unit = major cost reduction.
